In today’s ‘connected world’ it’s far too easy to feel disconnected from yourself and your surroundings. Now ask yourself: “When did I last ‘disconnect’ from today’s busy world?” How did it make you feel?
Many of us spend an hour at least everyday scrolling through our phones. Imagine replacing that one hour with one hour of exercise for mind and body. Exercise doesn’t mean spending hours in the gym, it can be as simple as finding a yoga mat. Yoga reduces anxiety, stress, tension. It leads to a clearer, calmer mind helping improve positive thinking, better concentration and decision making. It strengthens muscles, joints and organs and that’s just the start. So why not make one small change?
Yoga is for everyone.
Yoga is the total package for self-care, looking after body and mind. Strengthening your muscles, increasing balance, breathing energy and calming the mind.
No wonder people have been practising it for over 5000 years!
Born and raised in Canada, I am a World medalist figure skater. Part of my off-ice training programme introduced me to yoga. After my skating career, I continued with yoga as a tool for managing lower back problems caused by skating. Through this management process, I really began to notice the other benefits that yoga brought, not just physical but also to my energy and centredness. Undoubtedly, it is this overall wellness which is why I’ve been practising since 2002.
After falling in love with the UK during my time at University of Edinburgh, while completing my primary teaching degree, I decided to stay and teach in London. After a couple of years living in London , I met my husband and moved up to York. Over the years I have taught primary school and most recently am working in the corporate world. Deciding to combine my love of teaching with yoga, I’ve completed my teacher training with the British Wheel of Yoga in December 2022.
My goal is to introduce others to the love, strength, peace and happiness that yoga has brought me.
Yoga comes from Sanskrit, meaning union. This is the union of body, mind and spirit, something that is accessible to all people. It does not matter how strong or flexible you are, it’s a non-competitive practice which is most importantly guided by you. Your body will be your best guide and I’m here to help you.
‘Yoga by Megs’ will provide you with the tools to listen to your body and mind, ensuring you are getting the most out of your yoga journey.
These days, the body and mind union is more essential than ever, and when nurtured correctly, it’s roots and benefits will span to all aspects of your life.
A short taster session to give you an idea of what to expect in my weekly classes.
Research has shown that practising Hatha Yoga can reduce stress and symptoms of depression, increasing flexibility in muscles and joints and strength in your core, helping with better balance.
We’re an open, equal and respectful community, where everyone is welcome. ‘Yoga by Megs’ is committed to ensuring everyone has a safe environment to practise. Please note at this stage I am only offering classes to those over 18 years old, I may look at taking on younger students in future.
It is important to complete a Health Questionnare (provided on registration) before attending the first class. This is to ensure important background of your health is disclosed. Based on your individual health record, relevant modifications will be considered for you. If there are any changes in your health, it is important that those changes are communicated to me to ensure continued safe practise. But you know your body best and if your body is telling you to stop or make adjustments, listen.
Classes will start promptly so please arrive a few minutes early. Yoga is about being present in your practice so phones should be turned off or left on silent. We will begin with a centring exercise, followed by a warm-up, moving through more postures (asanas) and flow, finishing with breathwork (pranayama) and relaxation. Best to avoid eating heavily a couple of hours before class.
Your yoga mat, any padding, bolster, blocks or stool that you may like so that you can sit or lie comfortably and a blanket for relaxation. I can clarify these items for you.
Loose comfortable clothing, such as a t-shirt, jumper and jogging bottoms. It is best to come in layers so you can take some off when you begin to feel too warm. Although yoga is done in bare feet, bringing warm, cosy socks for relaxation is a must.
All personal information disclosed; such as contact details and health information, is confidential.
